Hüseyin is building a future in construction

Four years ago, Hüseyin fled to the Netherlands with his family. Accompanied him to a learning-work trajectory at the Bouwpraktijk, where he graduated in early December. “My dream is to grow in the construction industry and eventually start my own business.”

When Hüseyin came to the Netherlands, there were many things that had to be arranged before he could start looking for work. “Everything in the Netherlands was new. I had to learn the language and integrate.” Only when he and his family were settled could Hüseyin think about work. “I already had experience in the construction sector and wanted to work with my hands again, but I didn’t know exactly what was possible in the Netherlands. Helped me in a very personal way. They listened to my wishes and took my situation into account. I felt taken seriously throughout the entire journey and that gave me a lot of confidence.”

Sawing, carpentry, painting
At the Bouwpraktijk Hüseyin learned both the practice and theory of working in Dutch construction. “In twelve weeks I learned sawing, carpentry, painting, installing, tiling and demolishing. Everything that comes in handy in construction.” The group he worked with consisted largely of people who have not lived in the Netherlands for long. “It was nice to get tips on ways of building in other countries. But sometimes it was also complicated. Every culture has its own difficulties and working in construction can be dangerous. It’s really important to understand each other well.”

Hüseyin likes painting best. “I am interested in renovating houses and woodworking. Eventually I want to start my own business there, but first I try to start working at painting company Groenenboom through the Bouwpraktijk and gain more experience.

Do something in return for the Netherlands
Working in construction is not the only thing Hüseyin does. “When I just lived in Delft, I wanted to practice the language and contribute something to society. That’s why I started volunteering at the Papaver, where I helped remove tiles from gardens, for example. I still work there. The Netherlands opened its door to me and my family and in this way I would like to give something back.”
